Many brides don't even know what questions to ask when it comes to wedding gown preservation. Is it really best to tape my preservation box shut so I can get into it later. Or should my gown be sealed in the box so I can't get at it. What are the advantages and what should I be aware of? Some gown preservation companies provide tape so the bride can re-tape the box shut when done examining the dress. The companies who do allow opening of the preservation box and tape it shut again offer the shortest guarantees. They have to. Anytime one touches one's gown and or expose it to dust, dirt, body oils and moisture there is an increased risk of problems. When a wedding dress is removed from the preservation box it can't help but drag on the floor. Whether it's carpeted or hardwood the dress will pick up some dirt, dust and fibers from the surface. Touching the dress or having it touch a body can transfer body oil, sweat and make-up to the dress. If a dress is tried on this exposure is even greater - almost guaranteed to happen. Is that what you want to happen? There are three critical reasons why a wedding dress should be preserved with a company who seals the wedding gown preservation box. #1. Offer of a Lifetime guarantee. The gown is in a controlled environment and is not exposed to the dirt, dust, make-up etc. #2. Sealing the box keeps insects out and away from the wedding gown. Insects can crawl through very small cracks or holes. Mites, spiders, even centipedes can get into your dress and build their nests - unless the box has been sealed - not just taped shut. #3. Sealing provides a moisture barrier which keeps moisture out. (There are some who object to sealing the box, because they say it seals moisture in and can lead to mold or mildew growth.) When a wedding dress is dried properly after cleaning and then sealed in a preservation box there is virtually no moisture content in the dress. Mold or mildew can not grow on a properly dried and sealed wedding dress. The fact is: since the moisture content in the air changes dramatically from summer through winter un-sealed preservation boxes can allow moisture from the air into the wedding dress. As the season changes again the dress will dry and rehydrate over and over again. Sealing a wedding dress in the wedding dress preservation box might take some of the fun out of "playing" in the dress, but it's the ONLY solution to truly preserving your wedding gown properly.
