NTT DoCoMo in Japan branded as FOMA takes away the tag of being the first to divulge 3G technology (third generation). It was first available in May 2001 as a pre-release (test) of W-CDMA technology. The first commercial launch of 3G was also by NTT DoCoMo in Japan on 1 October 2001, although it was initially somewhat limited in scope broader availability of the system was delayed by apparent concerns over its reliability.
3G or 3rd generation mobile telecommunications is a generation of standards for mobile phones and mobile telecommunication services fulfilling the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) specifications by the International Telecommunication Union.
3G technology is intended for the true multimedia cell phone -- typically called Smartphones -- and features increased bandwidth and transfer rates to accommodate Web-based applications and phone-based audio and video files. 3G networks have potential transfer speeds of up to 3 Mbps (about 15 seconds to download a 3-minuteMP3 song). For comparison, the fastest 2G phones can achieve up to 144Kbps (about 8 minutes to download a 3-minute song). 3G's high data rates are ideal for downloading information from the Internet and sending and receiving large, multimedia files. 3G phones are like mini-laptops and can accommodate broadband applications like video conferencing, receiving streaming video from the Web, sending and receiving faxes and instantly downloading e-mail messages with attachments.
11 December 2008, India entered the 3G arena with the launch of 3G enabled Mobile and Data services by Government owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd MTNL in Delhi and later in Mumbai. MTNL becomes the first 3G Mobile service provider in India. The first Private-sector service provider that launched 3G services is Tata DoCoMo, on November 5, 2010. The others have then followed subsequently. All the operators provide 3G services on the 2100 MHz band. As of now, the Government owned BSNL is the most successful company with the subscribers of 3G service.
3G Smartphones have become everybody’s cup of tea and why should it not be by providing high speed and easy accessibility. Increasing in fame and opening up space for improvements, the band is moving forth to the 4G allowing a smooth metamorphism. Before 3G, the 2G phase in India was full of controversies; the 3G seems to run smooth and nice just like the 3G enabled handsets.
Several big phone brands like Samsung, Nokia, Apple, HTC, etc bring out 3G enabled handsets. These are very well equipped and effectively absorbed in the user market. The 3G Phone Reviews too speak well of the handsets giving them all the appreciation well deserved.
