Be it designing a website or a logo, it is through the trial and error method that a graphic designer learns. Mistakes are generally not committed by experienced ones but newbies in the business often commit blunders of serious nature. Though there is a saying, “To err is human”, but that doesn’t imply that that a graphic design artist keeps committing these errors without rectifying them.

Whether you are designer working in an established graphic design company or a fresher, you need to learn from your mistakes.

Here are some common blunders that designers should avoid:

1. Working without a Valid Contract

As far as graphic designing is concerned, there are always issues related to the remuneration of designers. This happens whenever you work with a client without signing a legal contract. There are some clients who will take advantage of this situation and delay your payments. You might be even denied of your remuneration.

To avoid such situations, always sign a legal contract so that you are paid for your hard work and true efforts.

2. Designing without a Client Brief

In every design project it is important that you have client inputs to have a clear understanding about the expectations of your client. Yes, I am taking about a design brief.

There are some arrogant graphic artists who work without a design brief. And when the project is delivered, the client doesn’t like the work. This happens when a designer doesn’t have all the necessary information about a client’s project.

Without having a design brief, you cannot successfully deliver a design project to the client.

3. Unaware of the Target Customers

When you are designing a website, it is important to convey the business message to your target customers. However, there are some designers who doesn’t pay much heed to the audience the business is targeting.

These designers ignore the target audience and therefore, build a website that doesn’t match their tastes and preferences. In order to create relevant graphics and designs, you have to first know and understand the audience.

Ignoring your target market will only result in weak and meaningless designs!

4. Ignoring Black and White

There are also some designers who ignore the importance of black and white. When they get an assignment, they start off at once with the colored version. Designers should always consider black and white as well, since some promotional medium do not permit the use of colors.

A logo design created in color might look dull when produced in a black and white format. Therefore, ignoring black and white is a serious designing blunder.

5. Copying Designs

This is the greatest blunder of all, and is beyond acceptance. When a graphic artist is hired to design a logo for a company, it is expected that he will create something original that becomes memorable.

There is a difference between getting inspired and plagiarism. There are some designers who often pass a copied design as inspiration! Such tactics might bring short term success, but jeopardize your position as a designer.

If you want to see your career graph rising, then avoid resorting to these mistakes.
