5 Questions to Answer Before Buying a Bar Stool

Just as you took the time to find the right dining room table and chairs, so should you not rush the purchase of bar stools for your kitchen countertop. Design, comfort, size, material and cost are all factors to keep in mind while shopping. Answer the five following questions about any bar stool you seriously consider for your home:

1. Does the bar stool match or complement other elements in the room? If you have streamlined kitchen cabinets in a dark wood and a dining room set in a similar stain and design, you would not choose a lightly stained farmhouse bar stool, for example. Maintain the consistency of your décor by choosing bar stools that either blend in with existing elements or complement them, such as, in this example, a pop of color with the same streamlined design.

2. Is the bar stool the right height? Before going shopping, either in stores or online, measure the height of your kitchen countertop and decide the optimal height for the bar stool seat. Consider only bar stools that meet the height requirement or opt for stools with an adjustable height.

3. Is the bar stool comfortable? Sit on it at the store. You don’t typically sit on a bar stool for an extended period of time, but you want the time spent in it to be comfortable. If you find a bar stool you like online, order one and test it out in your home. If you simply fall in love with the look of a bar stool that lacks in comfort, you do have the option of adding a chair pad. This also allows you to easily change this element of your décor as often as you like.

4. Will the bar stool wear well? Think about who will be sitting on the bar stool the most. If you have young children who eat breakfast at the kitchen counter daily, skip fabric-covered bar stools as they won’t hold up to the spills and drips. Look for faux leather, plastic, vinyl or acrylic instead.

5. Are you getting the lowest price possible for the bar stool? Just like dining room chairs, bar stools can be pricier than you might expect. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t spend the money on a high-quality stool, just that you should ensure you get the best price. Certain online furniture stores offer bar stools at up to 70 percent off regular retail price. Even if you find a bar stool you like in a brick-and-mortar store, before purchasing it, check to see if it is available online for a cheaper price. You might be surprised at how much you can save.
