Exercise for your dog is just as important as you yourself engaging in an exercise routine. Exercise keeps you health and fit, and it keeps your dog happy and healthy, both mentally and physically. But, helping your dog exercise isn’t always easy. It requires a time commitment that you may sometimes have trouble dealing with. But there are lots of ways that you can help your dog exercise that doesn’t require a lot of time.
Consider that all movement is exercise, so just getting your dog up and moving around will help him to get an adequate amount of exercise per day. I’m sure you are wondering how to accomplish that while you are at work or while you are running around yourself. Here are a few tips to dog exercise that may help:
1. Put in a doggie door so that while you are at work, your dog has access to the backyard or exercise area. He can then go outside whenever he wants, to do his business and get his much-needed exercise.
2. Hire someone to walk your dog while you are at work. This does not have to be an expensive endeavor—just hiring a neighborhood child will do. An energetic child will probably do more than just walk your dog. They may even play catch with him or ‘chase the stick’ or whatever to help your dog get even more exercise.
3. While you are sitting at home doing your paperwork, stop occasionally and throw your dog’s ball across the room. This will not only give you a probably much-needed break in your work, but will keep you involved with your dog and give him some exercise as well. Your dog craves your attention and this will help him get it.
4. Take your dog to doggie day care. There are centers available for dogs that are just like child day care centers. These centers offer activities for your dog to get exercise, offer your dog the chance to run and play with others dogs (therefore helping to socialize him), and will keep him happy with the companionship he will receive.
5. Purchase a treadmill for dogs. There are treadmills available just for dogs. These are designed for maximum safety for the dog so it is important to use the specially dog-designed ones instead of just the ‘human’ variety.
Although these are just five ideas that you can use to help your dog exercise, there are many other ways to include exercise in your pet’s life. Be aware that getting the proper amount of exercise for your dog is important to his overall health and mental well-being. Exercise for your dog may even help extend his life.
