Every Christmas so many Americans buy puppies for loved ones. This year when you give the puppy, also slip in this article to help out. There are many effective ways to train a dog, and we will be discussing some of the most common to the most unique tricks we have learned.
Dogs quickly learn whether or not you really expect them to respond to your commands every time or if they might be able to get away with not obeying on occasion. Don't send false messages! Don't give your dog a command unless you are prepared to follow through and insure your dog obeys that command.
If you are training your dog to do a complex behavior, break it down for him. A simple example is teaching your dog to get the morning paper. First, he needs to learn to hold an object. Then, he needs to be taught to go to the object by name. Then, he needs to be taught to pick up the object. Then finally, he should bring it to you. If you break it down, your dog will understand the linear relationship of the behavior.
Your dog wants someone to be in charge. If it isn't you, your dog may try to take the job. Dogs want leaders who provide stability and security. Be a good leader by being consistent, competent, firm, gentle, kind, and a good provider. Your dog will be happy to follow you!
Your dog should have appropriate boundaries when you're not able to keep an eye on him. This is doubly important for dogs still working through their initial training, because they are less likely to remember the rules of your household intuitively. This warning is doubly important for leaving untrained dogs outside unattended, as there's no guarantee you'll be able to call him home successfully!
To teach your dog how to sit on cue, first find a good, soft, smelly treat that your dog will find irresistible, like a piece of cheese or a slice of hotdog. Keep the treat small, about the size of the nail on your pinky. Then, take the treat in your fist, and hold it over your dog's head, low enough that his nose comes up to reach the treat, but not so high that he tries to jump for it. Smoothly move the treat backwards, and as his nose comes up, his butt will go down. Give the dog the treat as soon as his butt hits the floor, and say your cue word at the same time.
When you are giving your dog a command, make sure that you do not give it to him or her more than once. If your dog does not respond to the command that you are giving him or her then you need to try to do something to reinforce the command.
One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is to be firm with orders and do not overuse your commands. This is important because if you over-saturate your commands, your dog will not be as responsive. Only give your dog orders when you are looking for a response.
Make sure your dog has a special place in your home; one he can call his own. His special area should have his dog bed or pillow, his own blanket, and all of his toys. This will be your dog's retreat. You should encourage your dog to use this area during play times, but especially when there is increased activity at your home. One caution to remember though, is to never use it as a place for punishment.
A dog may be difficult to train sometimes but that does not mean it is impossible. Any dog can be trained with the proper knowledge of the subject. Now that you have gained some knowledge you can start to train your dog regardless of any traits it may have.
