“The era of the book may have turned its last page. Amazon.com says ‘its e-reader, the Kindle, is the most gifted item ever’…” anchor Harry Smith said on the Early Show in 2009. I became intrigued about his comment while I was watching the Early Show one morning drinking my decaffe and wolfing down my waffles. Usually, I would ignore such boastful comments made on a news network, but being the avid book reader I am, I decided to do some of my own research about the Kindle. The word, “kindle” its self means to fire up and to stimulate and the device definitely lives up to its name.

Upon my research, I discovered that Harry Smith’s comment on the Early Show may have been an understatement. First and foremost, the Kindle is a portable device developed by Amazon.com that reads ebooks (electronic books) and other digital media. They’re different models, but the dimensions for the latest model are .38" h x 7.20" w x 10.40" l, and 1.8 pounds. The Kindle does not use backlighting commonly used on LCD and computer screens. Rather, the Kindle uses start of the art electronic ink, so its display looks and reads like real paper, with no glare!
One other excellent feature I found is that you can download ebooks wirelessly and instantly from the Kindle device. The Kindle device contains its own ebook store where you can search by name and/or genre and download a book instantly (usually under 2 minutes) right on the Kindle. That bit of info excited me than a homeless man winning one thousand bucks in a local scratch off. Furthermore, the Kindle uses a 3G wireless network to download ebooks, so there is no need to hunt for Wi-Fi networks. For anyone who uses wireless devices and stalks Wi-Fi hotspots like a creep who stalks their ex-girlfriend, would appreciate the 3G feature. Most of the books downloaded on the Kindle are $9.99 and cheaper, therefore you don’t have to buy those new releases for $24.95 anymore.
Another great addition is that its very user friendly. If you come across a word that you are unfamiliar with while reading an ebook, the Kindle can look it up for you with no interruption. The Kindle also gives you links to Wikipedia.org, the web, and the Kindle store for additional research on the word you’re looking up.
If you’re like me, I have PDF ebooks that I have downloaded years ago, with topics ranging from dating advice to how to plant a seed. The Kindle actually allows you to convert personal documents such as Microsoft Word, and PDF files so you can read it on the Kindle. This is very convenient for me because I won’t have to deal with the hassle of carrying hard documents around with me anymore.
What also thrilled me is the battery life because you can read for days without charging it. The Energizer Bunny would be jealous. Also the Kindle automatically delivers your favorite news papers such as News Week, and Forbes each morning. Basically, each newspaper will be ready and waiting for you to read before you even brush your teeth. If you’re not a newspaper kind of guy, that’s ok because the Kindle also automatically updates blogs and news feeds all day long. If you like to listen to music while you read, the Kindle also plays mp3 as you read your ebook.
All in all, the Kindle is an excellent device that’s going to revolutionize the way we read our favorite novels, magazines, blogs, newspapers and much more. The average rating for the latest model on Amazon.com is 4 out of 5 stars. The Kindle set the Amazon.com sales record in the holiday season of 2009. It’s really a lot of fun, and I believe it will encourage children and adults alike to enjoy reading again because it’s interactive and modern.
