This highly informative episode included many behavior tips and inspirational stories about household pets. The final segment of the show, In Sickness and in Health, related vignettes of brave animals that saw their human partners through unforeseen illness or emotional hardship.

It is no surprise to any of us that our animals heal our hearts, minds, and bodies in ways we could never have imagined. As an animal communicator and licensed therapist, I have discovered that their furry good deeds go beyond the obvious, profound changes these creatures facilitate in us. We each have a soul agreement or Soul Contract with our animals: the lessons we endure while partnering with them are an indication of how we can heal and improve many other facets of our lives. There is always a connection between what is going on with our pets and how our own souls are evolving. Through animal communication, I have come to realize the animals understand and demonstrate this far more readily than most of their chosen human partners.

Lets look at one case example from the video on the PBS website. Jerry, a buoyant, wise German Shepherd, came into the lives of his humans while they worked long hours running a business from home. As most Shepherds do, he kept watch over them until it was "quitting time" at five o'clock, when he shuffled them outside for some much needed play and exercise.

Tragically, one day Jerry began limping. The x-rays revealed a large tumor in his shoulder. His family was devastated. They chose to remove the tumor and amputate the leg, in hopes that the cancer could be excised, and their fond friend's life prolonged. Despite doubts from friends and relatives, they made the right choice, as Jerry's journey was lengthened immensely.

How is this story different from the countless other, similarly tragic events we've all endured with our pets? Well, Jerry's parents went on to do something remarkable. Because they did not know how much longer their animal friend would be with them, they decided to sell their hard earned, thriving business and hit the road in an R.V., with none other than the Shepherd at the helm. Since his people noticed that Jerry was most happy and healthy while accompanying them on adventures, they decided to gift him, and themselves, with the grandest adventure of all. Four-legged and two-legged alike were more alive than ever, as they explored the boundaries of the United States, and their own hearts.

So what is the Soul Contract here? What were the lessons of this partnership? Jerry manifested a tumor in his shoulder, an area of the body that literally represents "shouldering or taking on too much." Which is exactly what his owners had been doing for many years. With only an expected few months to live, Jerry's human partners chose to lift the burden off of his shoulders, and theirs. The result? Jerry lived nearly six times longer than veterinarians had predicted! And his humans ventured out beyond their normal existence only to discover deeper parts of themselves in the process.

As with all Soul Contracts, the illness Jerry manifested served a grander purpose. It was his soul's path, while mirroring the soul paths of his people. After his initial diagnosis, his quality of life changed drastically, seemingly for the better, as did that of his human family. There is always a larger reason our animals come to us. Could some other animal have persuaded these entrepreneurs to abandon their business for the open road? Perhaps. But, after watching their incredible catharsis, I imagine it was no accident that Jerry chose to be their special animal guide.
