Eating the wrong food can go a long way in making your body age fast…real fast. A small change in your menu can keep you young and vibrant for a longer time, not to forget…. healthy!!!
Let’s start with food that should be present in the daily diet but in a controlled quantity -
1. Calorie consumption- High calories means high toxicity which can result in result in wasting away of the collagen in your skin. This can cause early lines and wrinkles on your face. They also make you look fat and add extra weight on your joints. This speeds up the onset of osteoporosis and arthritis.
2. Decreased intake of saturated fat. - Though exact cause is yet not known, but studies have shown that people who have a high intake of saturated fat show early signs of aging.
3. Cut down in the intake of salt and sugar- The required amount of sodium and chlorine is present in fruits and vegetables, so lowering their quantity in daily diet will not deprive the body of them. In fact, it helps to throw out excess toxins through the body, avoids hypertension and keeps stress away. Similarly excess intake of sugar only adds calories to the body besides increasing the chances of diabetes.
Regular consumption of the following substances can delay the onset of aging by a few years.
1. Raw nuts- Most nuts are a rich source of potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, selenium and vitamin E. They help the body in digesting the food better, boost the immune system, prevent cancer and help control cholesterol levels. You can generously sprinkle these on salads or deserts. Roasted nuts also make a healthy snack.
2. Cruciferous vegetables- These are a special group of vegetables that have cancer fighting and anti aging properties. These include broccoli, cabbage, cauliflowers, Chinese cabbage, radishes, turnips and watercress. Cooking them for too long destroys all the essential vitamins. They are best taken in form of salads or semi-cooked condition.
3. Berries- Berries such as blackberries, blueberries and blackcurrants are a rich source of antioxidants. They contain flavonoids which are phytochemicals. They act as a shield and protect the body against free radicals. They are also a rich source of vitamins and minerals and thus help to keep the skin nourished and healthy.
4. Green, leafy vegetables - are a rich source of vitamin C, carotenoids and anti-cancers substance such as sulphoraphane and genistein. These vegetables are a rich source of carotenoid pigments such as lutein and zeaxanthin. These substances help to prevent age related eye problems like cataracts and macular degeneration.
5. Tomatoes- Besides being a rich source of iron, they are also rich in lycopene, a powerful antitoxin. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant and anticancer agent arrests cell aging. Cooked tomatoes release more than double the lycopene than raw tomatoes. This antitoxin also effectively prevents coronary heart diseases and cancer.
6. Garlic- For year’s garlic has been known for its anti-aging, antibacterial and antiviral properties. It’s proved beneficial in treating intestinal, respiratory and skin infections besides helping prevent heart diseases and cancer. It controls hypertension, lowers the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, helps in thinning of blood and improves peripheral blood flow.
7. Soya- They help to maintain estrogen levels in the body thus help to prevent aging due to hormonal imbalance. It also helps ease menopausal hot flush and protect against Alzheimer’s and osteoporosis.
8. Fruits- Fruits such as watermelon, oranges, lemons and apple are a rich source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They also add fiber to the diet, helping in better digestion of food.
9. Ginger- has antibacterial, analgesic and antipyretic properties. It helps the digestive system, boosts the immunity and helps prevent rheumatic aches and pains.
10. Water- intake of more than eight glasses of water helps to flush out impurities, keeps the skin and body hydrated and maintains the normal temperature of the body. You can also take fluids in the form of juice, soups and broth.
