When most think of a skiing holiday in Europe, you would think of Switzerland, France, Italy or Austria. After Bulgaria’s inclusion to the EU it has opened up a new destination that offers a different experience to the traditional destinations.  Bansko, previously a stockbreeding and travelling merchant community, has these days become a centre of winter and summer tourism. Bansko is situated about 150km from the capital Sofia and is easily reached via a number of transfer operators. The mountain peaks near the town, the numerous lakes and the old pine woods make it a popular site for recreation in both winter and summer. Recently Bansko has also become famous for its annual Bansko Jazz Festival. In the nearby village of Banya, about 5 km away, there are 27 thermal mineral springs. The quality of the skiing is excellent with world cup skiing events being staged there. The ski runs are stretched over 70km and are serviced by 25km of modern high capacity lifts. The geographical location high in the mountain and with more than 160 snow cannons you can guarantee snow coverage from December to May. After skiing there are plenty of things to do in town, there are loads of restaurants and bars around Bansko, offering the tasty local cuisine along with fresh drinks.
