There is no roller coaster in this world that has as many ups and downs, thrill and chills, or that is as exciting and horrifying as being a parent. There are so many feelings that get mixed up through this part of your life and learning a few good pieces of advice about parenting can help smooth the ride.If your child seems to go through outfits like crazy because they are spitting up on them, don't throw out the stained shirts and bodysuits. Instead, give them new life by tie dying or decorating them. It will make for a cute new outfit while also keeping them out of the landfill.A great way to spend time with your children on a regular basis is to have a family game night. Pick out a game that everyone will enjoy or let family members take turns choosing a game. Playing a game together as a family is a fun alternative to sitting around watching TV or each one going off and doing their own thing.Teach your children to be charitable. There are many things that they can do to help others in and around their community. Volunteering at a soup kitchen or visiting the elderly in a retirement home are just a couple of examples. It's never too early to begin showing children the importance of giving to others who are in need.To get out the door on time in the morning, set an "alarm " - something fun and friendly, not jarring, to go off a few minutes before you need to be out the door. This will remind your kids how much time they have and to finish up what they are doing so they will be ready to go.A lot of parents have a habit of not practicing what they preach. They'll insist that children do as they say and not as they do, but you should not do anything that you wouldn't allow your child to do. Yes, this even means things like smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. Sure, you're an adult. But you're also a parent of an impressionable kid!Set goals that are attainable for your child. It's great to challenge them, but if you make every goal unrealistic, they are certain to feel like a failure. Set your expectations based on your child's age and abilities. Consider their personal interests too. This will help your child to see more successes, and fewer failures. You are likely to get very little thanks and appreciation from your child when you set boundaries for them, but you can take comfort in the knowledge that it is in their best interest. You are going to raise a child that knows that life is not all about doing what they want all the time. If you're having trouble getting your children to eat their meals, a good way to encourage them to do so is to include them in the preparation. You don't have to let them saute vegetables, but most children are capable of putting together a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Put ingredients in the fridge and let your child get them out to make their meal.Having routines with your child is important for the kid and for you. Making sure you wake them up at a certain time every day instead of changing it around, or ensuring that you're always there to pick them up at the same time - it's these types of things that create routines and work to build trust in the parent-child relationship.Even though most parents work hard to give their children everything they need, sometimes it is not enough. I have two children and four grandchildren and believe the one thing children need from their parents is to know they are loved. Just giving them material things is not enough.
