Instead, give them new life by tie dying or decorating them. It will make for a cute new outfit while also keeping them out of the landfill.Allow your child to share information with you free of interruption. Take the time to let your child talk to you in a quiet place, and always give your undivided attention. Encourage your child to come up with their own solutions to problems, but always be prepared to offer help if they need it. Once a child knows that their voice is heard, and their opinion matters, they will be much more likely to open up to you in difficult times.Teach your children to be charitable. There are many things that they can do to help others in and around their community. Volunteering at a soup kitchen or visiting the elderly in a retirement home are just a couple of examples. It's never too early to begin showing children the importance of giving to others who are in need.Encourage your kids to get the right amount of exercise. Your kids should be outside playing at least a few hours every day, barring some bad weather. Turn those HDTVs off and unhook the gaming systems. Make sure your kids are going outside to play in the open air where they'll remain active and healthy.When your child is acting up, trying giving them a second chance instead of punishing them right away. This can be done by simply asking your child to "please make a different choice. This allows your child to correct himself or herself and avoids the negative feelings resulting from more forceful discipline.Make sure you're putting your child first. Yes, work is important. Yes, it's nice to have some alone time. But your child should be your first and main priority in life. It's important that you let your child know this, too. If you want to raise a good child, you need to make them your priority.For a fun rainy-day activity, keep an art box. Use any box or plastic bin to keep random art supplies at the ready. Get creative; anything can be used as art supplies. Throw in old magazines, tissue paper, toilet paper tubes, packing peanuts or just about anything. It makes for a great creative activity on a day when you hear "I'm bored" one time too many. Communicating with your child regularly from an early age is very important. Not only does this directly help with basic things such as vocabulary and pronunciation, but it also helps them to become more comfortable communicating with you. You want your child to grow up in an environment where they feel comfortable communicating with and coming to you. It becomes significantly harder to establish this kind of environment as they get older.Provide your child with healthy meals and snacks. Giving your child well-balanced meals early in life sets the stage for life-long health and wellness. It is okay to give them treats every now and then, but make sure that you are not doing it to show affection. This can send an unhealthy message.Even though most parents work hard to give their children everything they need, sometimes it is not enough. I have two children and four grandchildren and believe the one thing children need from their parents is to know they are loved. Just giving them material things is not enough.
