Capital of Belize - Belmopan, one of the youngest cities in the world. Construction of the new Belize capital was started in 1970, after the devastating Hurricane Hatti, has caused considerable damage to the former capital of the country - Belize City. As a result, Belmopan construction began in 80 km south-east of the old capital, in the geographical center of the Belize country, much less prone to effects of the disaster. Belmopan grew up among the dense jungle foothills of the Maya Mountains, nearly 12 years, and now represents the most modern and urban city of Belize, full of government agencies, banks, restaurants and gambling. Most of its inhabitants (total population is about 7000 people) is a public employee and belongs to all ethnic groups living in the country. Accordingly, you can find such a variety of cultural traditions that the city is often referred to as "Belizean Babylon. Belmopan attractions include an impressive building of the National Assembly on Independence Hill, and the complex of government buildings, the University of Belize, the colorful buildings of many banks, the monument to "Belize - forward", called though the locals "finger", a gallery of works Carolyn Carr, one of the most Belize's famous artists, craft fairs Art Box, City Museum near the market in the West End, and a huge number of large parks, whereby Belmopan has received the honorary title of "garden city". At 3,5 km from the capital lies Guanacaste National Park, famous for its diversity of wildlife and lush vegetation, and at 14 km to the south - National Park Saint Hermann-Blue Hole, guarding the famous karst pit in the center of Lighthouse Reef, diameter about 300 m at a depth of 120 and associated caves, including underwater caves. Nearby, also within the Lighthouse Reef, lies the territory of another protected monument of nature - Half-Moon Cay, one of two places on the planet, where they found a large colony of Red-footed Booby, as well as 96 species of other birds.
