Best Way To Play Softball London For Everyone

Summer is almost over, even with this Indian summer, which means softball in London is over too. Well that is what I thought anyway so I searched around to see what there was to do instead, and I came across indoor softball with GO Mammoth. Indoor softball, is that even possible? I investigated further.

Indoor softball, it seems, is a scaled-down, faster game of softball, played on a pitch the size of a five a side football pitch. 8 fielding players are on the pitch at any one time, and instead of scoring runs for getting home, you get a point for every base you get to as a batter, and then one for getting home too, but you also lose a point for every out. You don’t have the usual 3 outs, instead you have innings of five minutes where you try and get as many points, or outs, as possible. Each team has two innings, so even if you are winning after the first team has battered twice, you can still lose if you get too many outs. It sounded very interesting and fun so I decided to give it a go.

I had told a couple of my team mates about indoor softball, and we signed up together to see how it was. We were put on the same team with a few extras to make up our squad. I emailed everyone to say hi and to see if anyone had played before. Most people replied saying they signed up for the same reason as me, to find out what it was like and to keep playing softball. All of us had played some sort of softball before, but never indoor. When we turned up for the first week, the GO Mammoth guys went through all the rules and introduced everyone to their team mates for the season. They emphasised the fun aspects of the game and made sure everyone was happy and ready to go.

It was so different to playing outdoor, but still good. It is so fast paced and you have to be on your toes the whole time, ready for anything. The ball bounces off the walls and netting, and there are people running round the bases. That five minutes feels like hours and seconds at the same time. When you are fielding, it just doesn’t seem to end but when you bat, it flies by. We all got right in to it, and were gasping for breath and laughing at the same time.

We squeaked out a win in our first game, but lost the second one in the night, which didn’t matter as we were able to get a pint before and after each game, which probably explains why we were all gasping for breath! Softball isn’t dead when the sun goes down, with GO Mammoth you can play softball London all year round, and really enjoy it!!
