Breast cancer affects about 1 in 9 women in the UK at some time in their life. Various UK health organizations and charities promote breast awareness to help identify early stages of breast cancer; despite this many women in the UK do not perform any regular check of their breasts. Many are unsure how to carry out a regular self breast check and be breast aware. The Department of Health in the UK has recommended a five-point code to help with breast awareness. This five-point code is specifically to let women check their breasts at home and provide reassurance before they are old enough to be called for regular mammograph screening or between mammograms. These five points are:

- Acknowledge what are normal conditions of your breasts
- Acknowledge what changes you need to look out for
- Feel and look for changes
- Consult your GP immediately if you find any anomaly or unusual change
- Attend routine screening test if you are over 50.

In order the feel and look for changes it is best to perform a self breast check. With help of this test you will come to know what is normal for your breasts. You will also acknowledge what natural changes occur in your breasts and hopefully spot any unusual in your breasts. In addition to being breast aware and carrying out a breast self check Breastlight is a useful device to help you learn what is normal for your breasts. Over time you will learn how to acknowledge normal changes and any unusual changes of your breasts. Breastlight emits a safe red light that illuminates the internal structure of your breasts. You will be able to observe the inner structure as pattern of dark lines. This is normal because the dark lines represent blood vessels and veins. Any other dark patch observed during examining of your breasts using Breastlight should be reported to your GP.
