In searching for employment many people would prefer to work for a larger company over a small one. They prefer positions that require their marketable skills and that have room for advancement within the company. There is no shortage of jobs out there but most people are looking for careers.
For starters there is less regulation against smaller businesses. For example often times all bets are off in small companies in terms of pension plans or health insurance. Most large companies have some sort of work/life balance program in their workplaces. This means that employees are able to take time off for personal reasons such as an emergency visit to the doctor with a sick child, or a week off for personal development. The idea is that happy workers, and those who are able to balance their work and family lives are more productive.
Whether you are looking for a job or a career there are labour laws here to protect your rights. You should become familiar with them and be able to inform an employer that is breaking the labor laws. We have minimum wages, and scheduling limitations. There is also a limit on the hours of work we can work in a week and the amount of time we must have between shifts. Know your rights and don’t get abused during your employment anywhere.
Many people prefer to work in a union where workers band together to protect each other’spositions and to ensure that each worker is treated according to contract. There are tons of perks for people in larger companies over positions in smaller ones. The closer you get to your dream job you may want to consider just how well they allow you to balance your personal or family life. The more critical your position the less flexible your schedule becomes. They need you there during the scheduled hours no matter what. If you need to be able go home early un-expectantly on occasion then you may consider a career where your roll is less critical.
If you are working for a company that doesn’t have a work/life balance system in place then perhaps you should approach management and start a grass roots movement there. Management will likely believe at first that you are simply attempting to work less. So you must convince them that the outcome of a more balanced work and family life is more productive employees.
If you are going to approach management about a work/life balance program then you should direct them to online resources including seminars for employees to become more productive. With managers and employees bettering their time management they will be able to produce more in less time to earn that time off.

You’ll notice that many of these are maintained by universities who want to incorporate these new systems into their training programs. Students coming out of these universities are trained with new approaches on improving time management in all employees.
