Aviator sunglasses (also known as "Pilot shades") are a style of sunglasses that were developed by Ray Ban. They are characterized by dark, often reflective lenses having an area two or three times the area of the eye socket, and metal frames with either paddles or wire temples which hook behind the ears.
Contemporary models are often polarized, although wearing polarized sunglasses for flying is unwise since they may mask the light glinting off an oncoming aircraft.
More recently Hollywood celebrities as diverse as Steve Mc Queen, Michael Jackson have been photographed in their Aviators. The 1986 action movie “Top Gun” did a lot to raise the visibility of Aviators with another entire generation when both Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer appeared with Aviators.
Ray Ban sunglasses have been seen in hundreds of movies; some of the most well-known are Breakfast at Tiffanys starring Audrey Hepburn, Blues Brothers with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi and Men In Black starring Will Smith.
Ray Ban Aviator sunglasses owe a lot of their popularity to the many celebrities who wear them. Most famously they were worn by The King of Pop Michael Jackson, English supermodels Kate Moss and Agyness Deyn, Megan Fox, Jessica Alba and Julia Roberts, Basic Instinct's Sharon Stone, actress and Keira Knightley, Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr, Angelina Jolie, the enigmatic Johnny Depp and many more celebrities.
