College: Must We Really Graduate and Move our Lives Forward?

Everyone claims that your college years are the best years of your life. Up until I graduated, I would look at those people like they were crazy. What is so great about college? At the time, it meant long hours studying and unfair professors who graded hard. Looking back on those four years, I finally understand what those people meant. College is indeed the best time of your life for multiple reasons.

Reason one: you are finally independent of your parents.

Attending a college about an hour away from my home was a good decision. I felt like I was far away from my parents, but not too far in case I felt homesick. Living away from home meant that I could do whatever I wanted without having to check it with my parents. I was finally in charge of my life, and I was forced to become responsible and grow up. I no longer had someone checking over my shoulder to see if my homework was complete. There was also no one to question why friends and I went to a late weeknight party. As long as my grades were good, I could do whatever I wanted.

Reason two: you meet friends you remain close with the rest of your life.

The friends you meet in college experience highs and lows with you. They are there to celebrate the perfect score you received on a test. They are also there for you during inevitable heartbreaks and to comfort you when you are ill. Living with friends brings you closer than you could ever imagine.

College friends see you at your best and your worst, basically experiencing everything with you. Most college friends come to know almost everything about you. This is why people stay close with college friends and roommates. You feel like you need to continue telling them about your life, even after you graduate.

Reason three: there are fantastic extracurricular activities.

Aside from the wild parties, there are many fun things you can do to get involved at your school. There are numerous clubs you can join, as well as rushing a sorority or fraternity. Since I danced my whole life, it was important for me to continue dancing in college. Joining the university’s dance team meant I could continue doing what I loved. It was also a great way to meet more people, especially with similar interests.

Reason four: you can focus on classes that interest you.

College classes give you the best education possible for what you want to do in life. Declaring a major allows you to focus on the subject that interests you most. For example, as an English major I no longer needed to take math or science classes, aside from the general education requirement classes. This allowed me to focus on what I enjoyed doing; reading and writing.

The college classes you take really serve as the training for jobs later in life. They teach you all about the subject so you are prepared for what may come your way. The classes you take do not offer training specific to one type of company, but they will provide an introduction or a skill-set applicable to many potential careers. More importantly than training (at least for me), college also helps you practice tolerance with others. There might be a coworker you despise later in life, but you learn to adapt to all types of personalities in college. Attending college is truly the best way to help you become successful in your life. And I’m not ashamed to admit that I do find myself missing it quite a bit.
