Compliment or Taarof, a system of politeness and positive speech act including both verbal and non-verbal communication, expresses friendship and increases rapport among people.

Based on people’s different cultural backgrounds and their various social values, there are of course some differences existing in using compliments and compliment realization.

Totally, Iranians’ compliment is an attempt to be appeared vulnerable, what other Iranians understand that this is merely courtesy. Actually they belittle themselves in public in order to show their humility.

A dimension of this etiquette, is the compliment response which is of two types that are: Agree with the speaker, and Avoid self-praise.
An example for a compliment response is that for instance if you are ever offered something like tea, sweet or anything else, even if you want it, you decline at first until their insistence becomes greater.

For sure, gender can have a significant effect on compliment responses. The results of many researches have indicated this fact that males are most likely to reject a compliment, whereas females tend to respond with acceptance or surprise to a compliment.
