Connecticut Construction Workers To Start Statewide Labor Protest Against Mizzy Construction

(Hartford, Connecticut) – The Connecticut Laborers’ District Council announced today that Connecticut construction workers will begin a statewide labor protest this Friday against Mizzy Construction, Inc., Plainville, CT, due to the construction site development company’s lack of compliance with area standard policies which include adherence to prevailing wage laws, assurance of quality construction standards and the participation in local apprenticeship and minority training programs.

“Frustrated Connecticut construction workers will start a statewide protest against Mizzy Construction this Friday at three construction sites where Mizzy Construction managers are on the job. We need to show Stanley Mierzejewski and his Mizzy Construction management team that all of us in Connecticut are totally disgusted with their policies of ignoring area standards,” said Charles LeConche, business manager, Connecticut Laborers’ District Council. “Mizzy Construction needs to become a good Connecticut corporate citizen and start paying fair wages, start implementing a quality construction area standards program and participate in a minority and local worker apprenticeship program.”

The protests will take place from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. starting this Friday, July 3, 2009 at the new Stop & Shop (www.stopandshop.com), Rt. 183 & Rt. 202 intersection, Torrington, CT; YMCA, Pinney Street, Ellington, CT; and Mizzy Construction offices (www.mizzyconstruction.com), 463 East Street, Plainville, CT. Mizzy Construction is also expected to start the Walgreens (www.walgreens.com), Rt. 6 & Jerome Ave., Bristol, CT, project in several weeks. The protests are scheduled to start on Tuesday, July 6, 2009 and continue through the summer. “We also are presently speaking with representatives from the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) about having their local employees who work at Connecticut Stop & Shop supermarkets possibly join us at these protest. We also have plans to talk with officials from the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Ellington about their construction project. What I do not understand is how YMCA officials can support the hiring of cheap labor on their project. I am pretty sure the Christine doctrine does not include undermining safety and labor standards in a community,” said LeConche.
