Unified communications, when first read, the word does not hold any significance. However, when put together, it sparks interest and intrigue.
As researched, UC (unified communications) is the integration of real-time communication services with non-real-time communication services. Real-time communication can be defined as live exchange of information e.g. chatting, phone conversations, video calling, etc…
Non-real-time communications refers to information exchange with the possibility of delay in receiving and/or response from the recipient. In this type of communication, if person “A” sends information to person “B”, person “B” may not respond quickly because of delayed or latency in the delivery of the message. It is also possible that person “B” was not informed or did not notice the received information. There is a so-called “waiting time” in non-RTC. SMS, email, fax are sme types or example of non-real-time communications.
In a business POV (point of view), UC is a great advantage since communication optimization is crucial to a company. Based on the above definition, it can be deduce that UC cannot be a single product. Instead it aims to “unify” and improve various existing system, interface, and media types. Utilizing UC, various form of communication medium can be used more freely. Sent fax can be delivered or viewed by SMS or email, incoming chat message and email can be notified through text, etc…
However, who would be able to use such system? With a system this advantageous or powerful, it does not appear to be suited for a regular consumer or for household use. It is well suited for large corporations where clear and quick communication between its employees is a must. UC can also be used by SMEs like contact centers, information workers, service type business, etc…
