Development: Boon or Bane?

Development over the years is slowly becoming a twin word for modernization. The mystery is that in this fast-paced society, where everything is being replaced in a matter of minutes, development has slowly and surely progressed, to mean anything that is “modern”. Development is gradually changing its core meaning—one needs to understand that it has now something to do with having anything better than the one that came before.

One cannot blame technology; it is one of the catalysts for development. And when one hears about development, the images of sci-fi robots, gadgets, and out-of-this world tools come into mind. If there’s technology, though, is there automatically development?

In the relatively wealthier nations, even a grade school pupil can enumerate the developments technology brings. The benefits just keeps getting and getting in on that list.

On the other hand, there is also the so-called low-impact development in some places. Development came to their shores, yes, but apparently, something went wrong along the process of introducing a particular development.

An example scenario may be this: a storm is approaching and the community brought some new storm drain catch basins to ease the dirt or mud that will surely accumulate with the inundation of roads in an area that is on the path of the brewing storm. These unwanted components in the floodwaters will then go to the streets and roads if left unmanaged. But then due to some technicalities, the supposedly usage of these tools were maximized; as a result, after the storm, the road is in nearly total chaos because of fallen trees, scattered dirt and slippery mud along the way. The sediments caused by floodwater, too, make passing on to major highway difficult.

The above situation is an example of low-impact development. The proper usage of the tools will be a big help to the community’s development to lessen the damage during the onslaught of a storm and other natural calamities. Owing to some unfortunate circumstances, the place was damaged severely and will take a lot of days before anything goes back to normal. Isn’t it a wonder why some places still experience flooding in spite of the so-called development?
