Perhaps one of the most dynamic fields in the modern world today is the field of Information Technology management or IT Management as it is commonly referred to today. Every day there are new changes and improvements in Information Technology and very often such changes have a fundamental impact on the provision and management of Information Technology. These regular changes have created the need for most large and middle sized firms to create an Information Technology department complete with a trained IT Management team to run it. In addition, the changes have also necessitated the creation of a number of interrelated disciplines within the field of information technology management. It is these disciplines that the paragraphs below will attempt to provide a better insight as to their nature, as well as their relevance to the general management of a firm.

Before embarking on an examination of some of the most renown disciplines in the field of IT Management, it is important to note that these disciplines are interrelated and, as such, it is sometimes not very easy to find a clear distinction between them, especially in some grey areas of Information Technology. This said the disciplines of IT Management include:
IT Governance
IT governance is a relatively very new field and can be said to have developed as an offshoot of Corporate Governance. As the title indicates, IT Governance is concerned mostly with ensuring that the firm complies with the compliance initiatives that are in place regarding Information Technology. In effect, it serves as a bridge between the key decisions makers in the firm and the IT management department. With the increase in the number of compliance initiatives being introduced all over the world, the field of IT governance continues to attract a lot of interest.
IT Service management
The focus of IT service management is the quality of the services that are traditionally provided by the IT Management department of a firm. Information Technology Management teams have been known to focus primarily on the technology side of business affairs, with little regard to service delivery to customers.
IT Alignment
This refers to the alignment of the firm’s information technology resources so that they are perfectly in line with the business objectives of the firm.
