Do You Have What It Takes to Be a Good Hotel Steward?

Hotel stewards need to know what’s out there. They should be men or women who frequently travel. In truth, this should be a requirement. Stewards need to see new places, visit countless hotels, restaurants – and these days, resorts as well – in order to know how they can offer better service to their own customers. By travelling, stewards learn from others. They are able to pick up pointers from other stewards.

This is something European stewards have learned a long time ago. I do not know with you, but I definitely hold European stewards in highest regard. It is not really surprising because Europeans really loved to travel. They explored China and the Orient. It is their exposure to finer things that stimulated their desire to be better. But before we go any further, let’s go down to the basics. Let us define the word “steward”. What is it really? Who is it really?

A steward has a simple job. He basically manages the domestic concerns of other people. That’s simple, right? However, the minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour, day-to-day tasks involved in doing that job is far from being simple. This is actually why we set up this site. We know there are a lot of things you would want to know – and unfortunately, it’s not always available to you. This site is meant to be your one-stop when it comes to all things regarding stewarding.

After all, stewarding does not come easy for all. No man is born a steward. He learns it. Stewardship is an ancient position and it requires men and women who are worthy of trust. This is why it is really an honourable position. Nowadays, you will find Stewarding Departments in practically every hotel, resort and restaurant in the world. This site, however, is primarily geared towards hotel stewards; albeit, our content is useful to just about everyone.

But what are the qualities of a good hotel steward? Do you have what it takes to become a good one?

Basically, a good hotel steward is someone who is honest and trustworthy. A steward is not just someone responsible for the well-being and comfort of hotel guests, but also someone who is in the position of trust. A good steward is judicious. He must ensure that the comfort and welfare of the hotel’s guests are secured.

A steward should be educated. He should also possess good judgement. Most of all, he should be honest. It doesn’t matter how good he is at his job or how well educated and experienced he is. Those things do not matter if the person is dishonest. Honesty is an important ingredient in a steward’s job.

A good judgment is also important for this job. He should know how to weigh circumstances and how to come up with a good decision, taking all things into consideration. He should know how to adapt to circumstances because he will be dealing with different people from varied background on a daily basis.

Nowadays, the duty of a hotel steward involves the following:

1. Ensuring that the hotel is supplied with all necessary provisions

2. Governing everyone in the stewarding department

3. Directing hotel services when necessary

These are just a few of his basic responsibilities. There are other responsibilities that a steward may have. It is important that a hotel steward develop the characteristics crucial to his job, so he will be able to deal with his responsibilities more effectively.
