Droid X vs. Droid 2: Speed Comparison Test

By sara : A how to tutorial about droid X vs droid 2, droid 2 features, droid 2 problems, Product Reviews with step by step guide from sara.

Motorola released the Droid 2 today to join the X and HTC's Incredible in the Android-phone lineup. We tested its operating system and browser speed against the Droid X.

The Droid 2 carries that all-new Android 2.2 operating system, while the Droid X carries 2.1. Both have 1-GHz processors and 512 MB of RAM. The main differences are the size, the keypad, the camera and, according to our test, speed.

Browser Test
When opening the stock Android browser and navigating to popularmechanics.com, the X beat the 2 by nearly 5 seconds. We then opened Google.com and TheOnion.com, and X beat 2 every time. The Droid 2 barely won the race just once, when we loaded a puppy photo from Google Images. Winner: X, by a mile

Camera Comparison
One of the main differences in hardware between X and 2 is the camera. The Droid 2 has 5 megapixels of resolution, image stabilization, a flash and color effects, while the X has 8 megapixels, flash, effects, but no stabilization.

Storage
Both have 8 GB of onboard memory. The 2 comes with an 8 GB microSD card installed, while the X comes with a 16 GB card. Both are upgradeable up to 32 GB (so both can support a total of 40 GB).

Display
Droid 2 and its 3.7-inch display has a trimmer profile than the X, with a 4.3-inch display. Even with its slide-out physical keypad, 2 is only slightly thicker, measuring 13.7 mm compared to X's 9.9 mm. And 2 weighs 169 grams, while X weighs 155 grams. The X, but not the 2, plays HD video.

The 2 costs $199 after a $100 mail-in rebate. The Wi-Fi hotspot service costs an extra $20 per month. The handset went on sale this morning, and stores may still have it in stock. At a Verizon store in Manhattan, the 2 was the only Droid in the store. The X and the Incredible were on back order.

The Bottom Line
The X is faster, and its screen is best for viewing movies and photos. The 2 is more compact and fits better in a pocket, and it's the right choice for those who prefer a physical keypad. If anyone is thinking of buying a phone for its incremental camera superiority, they should just get a camera.
