Cholesterol isn't really bad for you. But having lots of it can put you in some health dangers such as hypertension, stroke and heart attack. It's also said that too much of it can trigger cancer formation. That is why keeping yours within normal levels is essential. Continue reading to learn how to lower cholesterol levels naturally and effectively.

It's important that you're mindful of what you eat. Reduce your consumption of foods that are rich in low-density lipoprotein or LDL, or otherwise known as bad cholesterol. They usually come from animal sources. However, they also provide you with other essential nutrients, like protein and vitamins. Just see to it that you get rid of the fatty parts, such as the skin, when eating meat. Also cook them in healthy ways, such as grilling or broiling.

There are lots of foods you should have plenty of. Load up on green leafy vegetables as they're rich in natural soluble fibers that help lower your LDL levels. Have oatmeal for breakfast. There's a reason why manufacturers of oatmeal claim that their products are good for the heart, and there are researches to back it up. Go for old-fashioned rather than instant ones.

Soluble fibers in these food types help sweep out all the bad things from clogging up your arteries. When shopping for groceries, read the label and check if they're high in soluble fiber. Other foods high in this nutrient include carrots, peas, broccoli, prunes, pears, plums and citrus fruits like oranges, lemons and especially grapefruit.

Not all fats are bad for you because some of them can also make you healthy. These good ones are called unsaturated fats, and they work by increasing the amounts of good cholesterol, or HDL or high-density lipoprotein. Oils like flaxseed, canola and olive oil are great sources of good fat. Nuts are other sources, especially walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews and peanuts. They also contain vitamin E, fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids are very good for the heart. They also combat fatigue, depression, joint pain and prevent the blood from thickening. Aside from nuts, other food sources of these healthy fats include tuna, sardines, salmon and mackerel.

You should also maintain a desirable weight. It's important to have regular exercise to keep your circulatory system healthy. Fitness experts recommend for you to exercise at least 5 times per week, each time not less than 20 minutes. There really is no need to hit the gym because exercising can be as plain and fun as dancing, walking, bicycling and playing badminton.

Quit smoking if you're smoker. Although it's advised to steer clear of alcoholic beverages, having red wine with dinner is said to be good for the heart. It's because red wine contains plant compounds known as saponins. It's also good to have dark chocolate, but make sure it's not something that's sweetened or added with milk. Reducing stress is an important step on how to lower cholesterol levels. Especially if your everyday schedule is a busy one, find time to relax. Do yoga, listen to music, read a book, have a pet or take on a hobby.
