Some people think that the visual aesthetic aspect of designing electronic learning courses is not important. This is a grave error. This is not a matter of looking pretty or decorative. The aesthetic aspect of electronic learning is an important part of the learning process itself because it helps makes a course more engaging. How the modules look is as important as the very content because the aesthetics is what determines whether a course would be conducive to learning or not. Therefore, using the right elearning management system software or LMS software that will help designers create beautiful and functional courses is of the utmost importance. Choosing attractive LMS should be one of the highest priorities of instructional designers.
It is true that one of the most desirable factors that an LMS software can have is ease of use. However, this doesn’t mean that the software’s parameters should be limiting. A good LMS should also allow for more creative space. It should be simple enough and yet should also have enough functionality to give the designer more space for creating things that would really pop out of the box. This is the only way to make the course content engaging for the trainees or students.
There are of course some pretty basic tools that would help a designer achieve this goal. For example, there’s the screen recording tool which so many have found to not only be very helpful but also relatively easy to use. Such tools basically record everything that is happening in one’s computer screen so that one can upload this into the elearning course. This simple tool opens up many possibilities. Therefore, anything one can see as well as hear in one’s computer may be processed to become part of a course. This can be anything. Typing letters in a word processor, a video game, a web page, a video, a computer program, slide show of pictures, or your video camera feed, anything at all. If you like, you can appear in the course doing a commentary. Just record it. This tool also helps a designer give his or her creation a personal stamp. Visual tutorials of software programs for example while there is a voice commentary can be very easy with such a tool. The usual over-used demos are a thing of the past with this kind of tool on hand. A lot of elearning management system software has this kind of tool integrated within its software thus making it a lot easier for the course designers and creators. If one wants just to record sound, there is also a tool for that. Recoding sound through microphones and converting it into the usual Windows media or Quicktime files is very easy.
Again, an LMS or elearning management system software should not just be easy to use but should also give a course creator enough control in order to create stylish and beautiful courses. Prepackaged demos and videos are not enough to create a truly engaging course.
