Encouraging your Children to Read More

Some children simply prefer to engage in physical activities rather than pick up a book. While playing and being active in sports are good for one’s health, reading is as important. Knowledge and language skills can be enhanced with reading. Children are significantly benefited from being intellectually stimulated by reading.

One does not simply give a child a book and prompt the child to read it. Children are encouraged to read books, especially when it is done as a family activity. The selection of reading material is also vital for the child’s interest in reading.

Parents with very young children often start with teaching their children nursery rhymes and folk songs, but many don’t continue sharing reading material once the children go to school. For some parents, reading to their children one chapter of a novel a day is helpful in exposing their children to literature. Others purchase a shelf’s load of reading material and assign one book a week to their children.

Reading selections for children may not necessarily be examples of classic or canonical literature. Depending on the child’s interests and preferences, subjects for readings may include a wide range of topics. Many children are interested in science or sports; some prefer history or music. A boy interested in manufacture might enjoy reading about florida factory outlets, while his sister might like reading about famous painters and their works.

Reading as a family can be effective not only in developing reading as a habit, but for bonding. Thanks to the Internet, parents can determine which books are good and which ones are not. Books included in literary canon are often the best choices for reading.
