English Premier League- Chelsea draw with West Ham but Still Leader of the FA Premier

The leader Chelsea blew its chances to extend its lead to six points after drawing against West Ham United 1-1, in a match of the 18th week of the English Premier League. However, after the 3-0 defeat of Manchester United in hands of Fulham on Saturday, Chelsea extended its gap to four points over the Red Devils and six over Arsenal, who has a pending match. This month, Chelsea has attained only five of the 12 points played in the Premiership, but has been benefited by the irregularity of Manchester United, who has suffered two defeats so far this December. In a boring match, Chelsea showed too much passivity during long periods of time, which was taken as an advantage by the local team, who attained its first goal from a penalty. Ashley Cole fouled Jack Collison inside the penalty area.  Alessandro Diamanti had a clear shot and gave the advantage to West Ham 1-0 right before the first half was over. Although  Chelsea’s way of playing did not improve much, the team led by Carlo Ancelotti was more aggressive in the second half and this was rewarded when Matthew Upson committed a foul to Daniel Sturridge inside the penalty area. Frank Lampard tied from the penalty spot at 6 minutes into the game. Nevertheless, Lampard had to repeat his shot twice from the mark due to the invasion of his teammates in the area. The third time was the final one; as in the two previous attempts the England player made no mistakes and yet on this third time he scored with an even more accurate shot. With the draw, Chelsea did not diminish its efforts to go after the goal. West Ham could have had the victory if the referee called another apparent penalty sanction. But in this case the referee considered there was no foul by Ricardo Carvalho over Mexican Guillermo Franco. At the end of the match, the author of Chelsea’goal, Frank Lampard, stated that his team didn’t play as well as they needed to. “We didn't play well enough, particularly in the first half.  That was about as poor as we've played all season. We wanted to start sharp but we didn't do that, we gave West Ham the chance to get ahead and we made it tough for ourselves. “ “We haven't been at our best the last few weeks. It is important we get back to the training ground and back to the way we were playing a few weeks ago, because we were very strong and in the last few weeks we haven't been so good,” expressed Lampard. Now Chelsea sum 41 points as the leader while the reigning champion Manchester United has 37 after losing against Fulham. Behind are Arsenal and Aston Villa with 35 points, who came to the top after winning their respective matches on Saturday. Tottenham Hotspur is in fifth place with 33 points. This draw saved West Ham from falling into the last place of the Premier League, and is now one place above basement side Portsmouth who won against Liverpool on Saturday.
