Training in Martial Arts has changed over the years, at least in the mainstream Western world. It's become a lot more sports and tournament focused. With roots deep in the past, Martial Arts were oriented towards self-defense and survival, often with a religious side or aspect that complimented that objective and provided moral and ethical code.
Nowadays there are local, state and National Martial arts tournaments, and lots of dojos and clubs, and often kids can learn a Martial art at school as well. And this is a great thing, as the training often instills good values of behavior for kids to follow, and can provide them with a self-confidence that's not easily gained elsewhere.
As a sport, the variety of Martial arts that are available to learn have increased a lot. Where it was mainly Karate and Judo you could expect to learn 30 years ago, now it's easy to learn kick-boxing, Tai Kwandu, Aikijutsu and quite a few more.
As a family activity, Martial Arts are great. Kids TV is saturated with cartoon super-heros who are all good at it, so they see it as a cool thing to do. So it's not too hard to get everyone involved in an activity that keeps them fit, involves everyone in the family, and has a sport-competition focus (rather than the more traditional fight to survive aspect). I know a couple of families where
family martial arts have become a central part of their lives with all the benefits just mentioned.
