The good news is that we don’t have to cut out all the tasty foods we like; instead we have to find the right balance and only eat them in small portions. If you are unsure of how much of a food type you should be eating then follow this as a guide. We should be eating; • Plenty of products with starch in such as bread, rice, pasta and potatoes and where wholegrain is available try and opt for it as it is healthier. • Plenty of fruit and vegetables- We have all heard of the 5-a-day rule and you should try and stick to this where possible. • Some milk and dairy foods are good for you. • A steady portion of beans, meat, eggs and fish help you get the protein you require • Only a small amount of food and drinks that are high in fat and sugar is advised. Eating well and exercising is one we should all be doing but it may not be as easy as it sounds. If you are not used to exercising then you need to start off slowly and build up. Could you walk to work instead of driving or maybe invest in a bike, this is something that will get you on the right track. You need to do enough that will get the heart rate up and walking and biking is a great form of exercise. The foods you eat is obviously important. Oily fish is great for the heart and is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids with fish such as mackerel, salmon and sardines which are widely available in shops both online and on the highstreet. Of course plenty of fruit and vegetables is an important part to any diet but remember they can be brought in many different forms such as canned and frozen but they all count. With food that may seem boring it is often better to be inventive with them. To get your five a day why not turn your fruit into a smoothie which are very tasty, carrot and orange is a good combination to so you are mixing fruit and vegetables. You can search online for some good ideas on eating healthier and for some good recipes. We should all be trying to eat healthy food at the moment to stay fit and healthy during winter. There is also a wide range of fairtrade food available for those who take an ethical stance.
