When you hear 'fine dining holidays', it's easy to jump to the conclusion that you will have to shell out hundreds of pounds on Knightsbridge hotels and menus from stellar-priced chefs. However, if you look in the right places, there are some great late holiday deals on offer in Devon. There is cheap accommodation everywhere, from which you can explore on the richest culinary areas of the UK. Restaurant owners in the West Country are fiercely proud of their produce, and rightly so, for it provides the materials for some fantastic food, right on our doorstep.

If you want something that matches the glamour and opulence of London's finest, then look no further than Gidleigh Park near Newton Abbot. Gidleigh Park is a two Michelin star restaurant with rooms run by head chef Michael Caines, set in beautiful grounds in the Devon countryside. The food is superlative, and there are a range of dining options, with 3 course meals with coffee coming in at £99, and tasting menus from £110. This might seem expensive, but if you'd made a saving on places to stay you might like to splash out on what the Sunday Times ranked the best restaurant, place to stay and wine list in the UK. They also offer late holiday deals and dinner with room packages.

If you want Michelin star food with less of a price tag on your holidays, Devon has more to offer. The Mason's Arms in Knowstone has one Michelin star, and is a perfect place to stop and take lunch in the converted 13th Century Inn or on the terrace and gardens there. The family-run establishment offers a warm atmosphere and menus, which exhibit the quality of local seasonal produce. The Room at the Elephant Brasserie offers a completely different setting, set on the harbour front at Torquay. Again the Elephant's menu carries a lot of local produce, most notably the Devon crab, scallops and other seafood, prepared in a contemporary style. Their tasting menu is well balanced and shows off Devon's food, especially its range of cheeses. At £60 a head it won't bankrupt, even on cheap holidays.

Very cheap holidays in Devon can also provide you with some fine-dining experiences; a great money saver is to go for high-end restaurants for lunch and save money on dinners (the local seafood works well in batter too). The Vanilla Pod Restaurant, hosted at the Cridford Inn near Newton Abbot, and James Duckett at the Old Custom House both offer an exciting menu for under £30 for 3 courses.

Devon holidays don't have to be all about fine dining though, as the region also offers fine walking spots, top fifty golf courses (two at Saunton) and great waters for surfing, so get out there and explore!
