Italy vs France is the all-continental clash of the Six Nations and it should be a match where France can pick themselves up after the defeat to England two weeks ago. France will expect a win in Rome but you can guarantee Italy will fight as hard as ever to clinch their first victory over their neighbours in Six Nations history.

Italy have become a much more solid outfit at home in recent years and with France underperforming they will see this as their best chance in a long time to finally beat Les Bleus. In their two games at the Stadio Flaminio so far this year Italy have performed admirably in two defeats. They pushed Ireland all the way and victory was cruelly snatched from them by a 77th minute Ronan O'Gara drop goal. In their next fixture in Rome Italy fought hard with Wales and were close to staging a great second half come-back, but their efforts were undermined by missed penalties from the boot of Mirco Bergamasco.

Italy will have to be wary of a wounded France but if they can maintain their solidity in the forwards and exert pressure on the French pack for a full 80 minutes they could be in line to cause an upset. Their pack will need support though and Bergamasco must take every chance he gets to kick three points, while the backs must defend well and try and penetrate at every opportunity.

France need a good performance against Italy to put to rest the lacklustre performance against England. In their last trip to Rome France ran out 50-8 winners, but this French side is a shadow of its former self.

They do have the overwhelming weight of history on their side though. In eleven Six Nations meeting with Italy France have scored 436 points while conceding only 158. This makes the average score line between the two roughly 40-14. Furthermore France will be keen to finish the championship strongly to give them some sort of platform to build from in preparation for this autumn's World Cup.



Italy will be looking to defy the tide of history when they host France in the Six Nations match they fear most at Rome's Stadio Olimpico on Saturday. While Italy have on occasions kept things reasonably close in Paris since they were admitted to the Six Nations, at home they have suffered one thrashing after another.

Three times in their five games at home to the elegant French in this competition they have conceded more than 50 points. Italy have even seemed to be getting worse rather than better against France having lost 42-31 and 30-19 in their first two Six Nations efforts against the French. In 2005 they were humiliated 56-13 at home and two years ago it was just one point less embarrassing as they succumbed to a 50-8 reverse.

The last two years alone have seen them give up 96 points in a game somewhat pointlessly played for the honour of holding aloft the Garibaldi trophy, first awarded in 2007 and so far won only by France. In fact, Italy have only beaten France once in 32 previous encounters and that dates back to when they were still amateur, in 1997.

But now the two sides come into the game with very different objectives in mind. Despite their 17-9 defeat to England at Twickenham two weeks ago, France can still win the Six Nations championship if they win their final two games and the English slip up against either Scotland or Ireland.
