More durable than most other types of TV, and producing pictures whose quality is far superior to most, plasma TVs have become the major success story of recent years. Despite the fact that most modern houses actually have less living space than their older equivalents, it has become common for the TV set to be the focal point of a house. Major events are broadcast in quality which, until recently, could only have been dreamed of.

A case in point is the recent Royal wedding. This showed not only that there was an insatiable desire for pictures which place us right at the heart of the action, but that nearly all major events look so much more lifelike and are more involving when viewed on a large screen. Perhaps that’s why, although hundreds of thousands of people were prepared to line the route of the wedding procession to get a glimpse of Prince William and Kate Middleton, many more were happy to stay at home for the day, and watch in comfort as the spectacle was brought right into their living rooms.

Only the most die-hard royalist can really have been expected to have stood on their feet for several hours, just to get a passing view of the Royal couple. And while some will undoubtedly say that such events are once in a lifetime chances to take part in a mass public celebration, all those who made their way to London for the day will still, no doubt, have recorded much of the proceedings to enable them to relive the excitement of the occasion many times over, for many years to come. The quality of the pictures produced by modern plasma TV screens is also a major reason why watching any major event at home is so much more involving than it has ever been.

Of course, in the modern media age, television cameras will be granted a far better, more all-encompassing view than that which any single person can expect of an event on such a grand scale. Being in the same spot for several hours no doubt affords many people a view of events which they will long treasure. But thanks to the massive resources which the television stations devote to reporting on such events, there’s no way that one pair of eyes can really take it all in. That’s where television, the medium which gives us a privileged view of so many major events, can make it feel as though we have a VIP ticket to so many top occasions.

We have become used to large-screen plasma TVs giving us the bigger picture but when an occasion for national celebration, such as a Royal wedding, takes place, only the latest plasma or LCD TVs can do justice to the scale of the occasion.
