Indeed, the job hunting exercise has changed over the years. Finding a job has become a lot more difficult and intricate. As more and more applicants vie for jobs, HR executives are finding ways to fill up their vacancies with the best candidates.
Stories of hardships from jobseekers fresh out of college are a common tale-- applying from one company to another and visiting one job fair to the next. For months or even years, these jobseekers would stay in the unemployment scoreboard and hope that the stars of success would shine upon them and lead them to the doorstep of a Company.
Twenty-two year old Carl Fraz Carrillo had just finished Bachelor of Arts Major in Classical Philosophy from Lorenzo Mission Institute. While waiting for the release of his college diploma, he chanced upon the news about a career hub at SM City, Cebu that might be able to help him get a job.
“I had been a member of JobStreet.com for two years already. I receive LiNa messages regularly for jobs that I can apply to. One day, I got this email from JobStreet.com inviting me to apply for jobs in their Career Hub at SM. A friend also informed me about this. And so I went…” starts Carrillo during our short tit for tat.
The fresh graduate continues on by saying “Through JobStreet.com, I was able to apply online and had been interviewed by several companies including BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) firms. But when they opened the Career Hub here in Cebu, I was helped further by JobStreet.com. I was able to browse for more jobs through their on-site job portals, receive advice from their staff to read their Career Services on how to prepare a winning resume and how to answer well during job interviews, and most of all, meet employers during their Hiring-On-The-Spot (HOTS).”
During the HOTS, Carrillo queued up for a job in Magic Melt. His patience paid off that day and he was called for another interview.
Is jobhunting difficult for a fresh graduate like Carrillo?
“Yes… I think it is difficult but you have to get a headstart among the rest. My being a JS (JobStreet.com) member for two years already has helped me a lot. I was able to know what jobs I can look forward to after college. I was also able to use their online jobhunting tools that made finding a job easier, faster and cheaper. With just a click, I can apply to many jobs… by just browsing through my LiNa alerts and through the JS website, I can apply to more jobs in an hour compared to going to each company in a span of one day. And most of all, I don’t need Php 1,000.00 to apply for a job. With just Php 30 worth of an hour’s internet access, I can apply, “ he says.
But more so, Carrillo is thankful for the Career Hub. He says that the experience of learning application tips and even applying through the hub has made him more hopeful and confident that there is a job out there for him. All it takes is preparation and persistence.
Meanwhile, the country’s number job site, JobStreet.com is positive that by providing him with a head start in job hunting, Carrillo shall tell his success story one of these days, “Success started here—with JobStreet.com.”
