Gold Farming Guide in Plants VS Zombies

There are actually multiple ways to earn gold throughout the game (including just playing around with the Zen Garden), but this guide will cover one of the most popular methods - using the 16th mini-game "Last Stand" to collect up to 8-9k gold per game. I suggest unlocking and completing it first to get an idea of how the stage works and to see what kind of zombies you're up against.

In a nutshell, you're given 5000 sun to defend a pool level against 5 flags of zombies. After completing a wave, you're awarded 250 additional sun each wave to help bolster or repair your existing defenses. Keep in mind that sun will not ever drop and you're not allowed to place sun plants anywhere. The key to great gold farming is to create a minimalist defense near the front of the yard, while packing as much Marigolds and Gold Magnet Mushrooms in the back. You can effectively leave the stage running and with no interaction, collect tons of coins.

The Strategy

Your 9 plants/seeds should be the following:

1. Lily Pad
2. Marigold
3. Coffee Bean
4. Garlic
5. Pumpkin
6. Magnet-shroom
7. Gold Magnet
8. Fume-shrrom
9. Gloom-shroom
10. Optional 10th: Tallnut

In the first image, we place several magnet-shrooms to take care of the various ladders and jack in the box zombies and more importantly, the huge football zombie rushes that occasionally happen. While you may want to use tall-nuts to defend your stuff, I found that there is enough sun provided to refresh enough pumpkins and garlic for all 5 waves. The gloom-shrooms and fume-shroom should be more than enough to handle all the waves, especially with the magnets reducing their defenses. You will have to replace the garlic every wave or so and maybe a few of the pumpkins.

In the second image, we go for a much more aggressive setup by placing as many marigolds as possible to maximize cash by ignoring placing any magnet-shrooms. The two gold magnets are positioned to be able to grab from the whole screen and we use 3 gloom-shrooms to output the damage.

Due to the lack of magnets, zombies will likely eat through your pumpkins eventually so you will have to be on the look out to replace when they get raggedy looking. When the garlic starts looking unhappy, consider replacing those as well. There should be more than enough sun provided after the waves to bolster your defenses.
