Following on from Part 1, I want to further explore some useful tips that students who will soon be graduating can take on board when looking to get that all important first step onto the job ladder.
4) Security settings – Allowing a potential employer to view your Facebook page is a fantastic way of inadvertently showing yourself off, so ensure that privacy settings are such that people can view you without having to be your friend. Although privacy settings are important, graduates seeking employment need to be visible.
5) Integration – It is useful to integrate your social networking so ensure your Twitter profile link is visible on your Facebook page and LinkedIn profile, likewise with your Facebook page link being made available on your Twitter profile and the same with LinkedIn profile. All social networking profiles should also be integrated with one another; employees at social media agencies have already been doing this effective networking tip for a number of years.
6) Be visible – Make sure your Twitter details and Facebook details are visible at all points of contact. Put the necessary links in your email signature as well as the top of your C.V. If you are bold enough to make your own business cards, put your Facebook and Twitter details alongside your email address and contact numbers. You need to make it easy for potential employers to find your networking profiles should they wish to.
7) Share – Social media is the ideal platform to share snippets of information that interest you such as news pieces or articles that are applicable to the field you are hoping to enter. Doing so will display a dedication and enthusiasm to your pending career that will stand you in good stead above other candidates.
8) Be proactive – Although it is advantageous to share articles that you have found, what would really make you stand out of the crowd would be if you were to write and publish your own articles or even set up your own blog. This is free to do and can then be shared or linked to a social networking profile; it will also display an aptitude that really will impress most employers.
9) Network – Use social networking profiles to do what they were intended for, networking. Follow or ‘like’ relevant brands to stay up to date with industry news and follow relevant people such as HR Managers in order to gain an insight into a company. Interact with the company’s Facebook page or Twitter profile – if you were to comment on a company’s Facebook page a notification would then appear on your wall which a potential employer would see. LinkedIn is also a great platform for creating professional networks, finding jobs and making your C.V. visible to others.
10) Personality – Above all, it is important to be yourself and show your personality on your social media profile. You will affectively be using online PR methods to promote yourself. If an employer doesn’t like what they see then it might be because you aren’t right for the company so just follow these steps and persevere.
