Car repair shops are everywhere. Many of these are operated by less than honest individuals and unsuspecting car owners have found that they have paid for shoddy work or a wrong diagnosis.  However, many honest car repair shops are still around. Their integrity can be discerned through the location, the level of professionalism, explanations that reveal knowledge about cars (especially yours), and the pace of business.

Notice the Location
Notice the location.  It says three things about the intentions of the operator. The first is that it is centrally located to save customers time and money. This is one of the signs that tell that the shop is service oriented. The second is that the surrounding environment suggests that security is assured: this emphasis on physical and psychological comfort signals that customer and their needs are at the heart of that establishment. The third says that the operators are image conscious. When image matters persons have much to lose. Persons who have much to lose will want to be persons who are known for their honest dealings.

Look for Professionalism
While professionalism does not guarantee honesty, the possibility exists that you are looking at a shop where the intention is to provide professional service.  This means that business will be operated according to ethical procedures and that the customer’s rights are valued.  An additional sign is that there is a paper trail as transactions are recorded, and receipts are duly given to customers.  If you see such transactions taking place, then most likely the intention is to provide honest service.

Assess the Knowledge of Workers

Honest repair shops usually have workers who can provide in-depth explanations about cars.  Their presence speaks to attempts to provide honest service.  The explanations they give, especially about your car, should reveal the depth of knowledge that can tell whether or not it is possible to get a job well done.  If this is a feature of the shop, it is likely that honesty is a policy.

Notice Patronage
Watch the pace of business.  Is there a steady stream of customers?  Are there jobs at hand to be done? If these features are present then it is likely that customers are satisfied with the service.  People avoid places known for dishonest dealings.  Follow the crowd; you will find this is great advice on spotting an honest car repair shop.
