Top 10 Hardest Video Games - 10. Zelda II: The Adventures of Link (NES)

Still not scared? How about the fact that each time you kick the bucket in Zelda II you lose all of your hard-earned experience points. While the game still maintains the timeless music and exploration that makes all of Link’s adventures so good, the puzzle solving and charm are lacking here. Apologies to Zelda, but no princess is hot enough to be worth this much frustration to rescue.

Hardest part: When this game was released, the Dark Maze in Death Mountain was far more complex than anything seen before in a Nintendo adventure game. The mountain has appeared in many other games in the series, but never was it as fear-inducing as in Zelda II.

Top 10 Hardest Video Games - 9. Alien vs Predator (Jaguar)

This nail-biting game allowed you to play as an Alien, a Predator or a slow moving, low-powered, sitting-duck-like marine. With enemies silently pouring around every corridor corner, AvP causes you to constantly stay on your toes to avoid a bloody ambush.

Hardest part: Have you even seen the movies? Apollo Creed, Jesse “The Body” Ventura and The Terminator could barely take down one predator, let alone dozens, and those chest-bursting aliens -- forget about it. Playing as a marine means you are a walking hot lunch, it's just a matter of time.

Top 10 Hardest Video Games - 8. F-Zero GX (GameCube)

If road rage is a common occurrence for you when you drive, stay very far away from F-Zero GX. While this game is probably the best entry in Nintendo’s futuristic racing series, it is also by far the hardest. Attempting to take on the Black Shadow in GX’s Story Mode on "hard" is just asking to have your day ruined.

Hardest part: Facing off against Black Shadow at the conclusion of the story mode in F-Zero GX is pretty much mission impossible. He will break your spirit long before you beat him to the finish line.

Top 10 Hardest Video Games - 7. Contra (NES)

When you are the game responsible for popularizing cheat codes in home consoles, it should be a major warning right off the bat. Sure, anybody can take on Contra with a buddy and the famous Konami 30 lives code activated, but the truly insane option is to battle Red Falcon and his alien army solo -- with no safety net.

Hardest part: The waterfall level in Contra makes you not only contend with a barrage of enemies, but there’s also a screen that scales while you climb. If you don’t move fast enough or miss a jump, the edge of the screen equals instant death.

Top 10 Hardest Video Games - 6. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (Super NES)

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels was so ridiculously hard that Nintendo executives actually blocked its North American release because they were worried it would frighten gamers in the United States.

The best part is that these deadly fungi actually look the same as their helpful cousins, making it a dicey proposition to pick up anything in this game.

Hardest part: The enemy placement is much more random and frustrating in The Lost Levels. Anybody who has turned on an NES knows a classic game like Mario Bros. inside and out, but in this devil-spawn Goombas and Koopa Troopas will pop out of nowhere for a quick kill.
