Hartnell College Receives Stimulus to Train Green

Stimulus funds are planned to be used by Hartnell College to train Salinas professionals in green construction. The money is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Hartnell College received $999,862 to enroll residents in its green building training program. Hartnell College, which is in partnership with Santa Cruz County Workforce Investment Board and Cabrillo College, will keep $600,000 of the money for the program. The funds will provide training for 60 students. The program is 6 months and will provide students with 300 hours of classroom credit. The students will also spend 300 hours in paid interships working for green construction companies. This program, just like Rich Hessler's Solar Training , is driving the reeducation of the American workforce to the new, green economy. The jobs demand environmental awarenessness and energy efficiency. In addition, the college received part of the California Clean Energy Workforce Training Program funds. The plan calls for training of 5,600 works to perform the hands-on jobs to come including: solar panel installation, electrical vehicle maintanence, and fuel cell technology.
