Health Care Jobs Pay Higher and More Career Opportunities Offered

In more years to come, job opportunities for health care providers is expected to increase. The enrollment rate for nursing and medical programs was noted to increase, to the point where educational institutions have to turn away some qualified applicants because of a shortage of instructors. This is due to the fact that health care jobs pay well and many opportunities for career advancement.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in February 2011, 34,000 jobs were open for occupancy. Furthermore, health care workers will expect 3.2 millions to be open in the coming years in addition to the 14.3 million labor force in the health sector.

The increase in the number of vacancies in health care jobs can be attributed to baby boomers reaching their age of retirement and requiring long-term care and patient care services. Medical assistants, medical records and health information technicians, and Registered Nurses (RNs) are some of the professionals at the top of their field; they are ranked as some of the highest-paid health care providers.

Many medical teams require the expertise of medical assistants. They do important duties such as monitoring patient care and information, sterilizing and maintaining medical supplies and apparatus. The US Department of Labor predicts that by 2018, job growth for medical assistants will reach 34%. Medical assisting programs are offered in vocational schools and junior colleges. In 2009, they make an annual mean salary of $29,450 with the top professionals making up to $40,000.

The medical records and health information technician or medical technician provides assistance to doctors by keeping records and updating them for reference of health histories. A medical billing certificate is necessary to become a qualified medical technician and this can be obtained in less than a year depending on course load and program taken. In 2009, their mean annual salary was $33,880 with top earners earning up to $51,510.

Nurses make up the largest population of health care providers; they are also the top earners and considered by the people as the most trustworthy professionals in terms of honesty and ethics. They work in various settings and are in charge of many responsibilities. Some of their duties include administering medicine, providing bed care, monitoring treatment and recovery process, assisting doctors and supporting families. One can become a nurse by taking any of these programs: Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program, Associate’s degree and Diploma in Nursing. 581,000 nursing positions will be vacant through the years 2008 to 2018, according to the US Department of Labor. In 2009, it reported that RNs made a mean annual salary of $66,530 with the top earners making up to $93,700.
