A 59-year-old Minneapolis woman swimming at a downtown Minneapolis fitness center pool was pulled from the bottom early Friday morning by two fellow club members and was fighting for her life Friday evening, authorities said. The "near-drowning," as the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office termed the incident, happened about 5 a.m. at Life Time Fitness at Target Center.Kathleen Jeanne Weber-Malaske was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment, the Sheriff's Office said. Weber-Malaske was in critical condition Friday, a hospital spokeswoman said.She must have suffered "some kind of medical emergency" soon after she entered the pool, said Life Time corporate spokesman Jason Thunstrom.Weber-Malaske had been swimming laps, then another swimmer spotted her at the bottom of the pool, the Sheriff's Office said. The swimmer and a second person, men ages 52 and 45, pulled her from the water and began resuscitation efforts.   Peak Fitness closes its gym in Clemmons CLEMMONS -- Peak Fitness has closed its club at 6221 Ramada Drive in Clemmons. Peak Fitness and Fitness Management Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy July 10. It closed its club on Robinhood Road on Aug. 24 because it could not renegotiate a lease with its landlord, but had kept the Clemmons club open.   But Peak has now decided to move out of the Winston-Salem area, the company said in a letter to club members that was posted on the club's door. Peak has made arrangements for the Ramada Drive club's memberships to be transferred to the Fitness 2000 Gym and Wellness Center at 1415 River Ridge in Clemmons. "Peak Fitness deeply regrets the closing of this facility," the company said in the letter. "We hope that you find the accommodations established for you to be satisfactory." Peak's former Robinhood Road club is being looked at by the YMCA. Amy McNeil, a spokeswoman for the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina, said that one of the projects in the organization's current capital campaign is to open a new YMCA building in the northwest part of Forsyth County.   She said that the Peak club on Robinhood Road is one of the locations that YMCA officials are considering for the project, but that no decision has been made. Crunch counts over 70,000 members and over 19 clubs in major metro cities such as San Francisco, Miami, Los Angeles, and New York. Crunch is reknowned for having popular DJ's play live sets in their gyms. New Evolution is run by Mark Mastrov, the founder of 24 Hour Fitness, who now runs a venture fund that targets fitness businesses. Mastrov, who tranformed a then unknown San Francisco gym into the $1 billion 24 Hour Fitness chain, is working on other deals besides Crunch. Future projects may include opening Ultimate Fighting Championship-themed gyms and investing in a yoga studio chain, YogaWorks, that is expanding in the Bay Area.Of course it isn't necessary to join a gym to get in shape. You can always workout at home and build your own affordable custom gym. Along with the gym, don't forget to eat the right pre-workout foods.
