As a homeowner, taking care of the furniture and items around your home is a good investment. Like the carpets and flooring around your home, the drapery and the decorating fabric covering your furniture also need special care and attention in preserving its high quality. If you have a Warwick Australia product, you will find the product to be made of high quality fabric.

To help keep it in excellent condition for the many years to come, you must take steps to ensure that the Australian made fabric is properly cared and maintained. If you are a home owner determined in caring for your home, these useful fabric care tips will help:

1. Protect the decorating fabrics on your furniture

In the physical arrangement of a room, the furniture’s upholstery fabrics should avoid touching the walls or radiators. By doing this, you can prevent moisture from building on the decorating fabric or being scorched by the radiator.

2. Provide sufficient ventilation in your rooms

Mild sulphuric acid, caused by oxidation and fumes from chimneys, fire places or even stoves can cause discolouration and deterioration of the decorating fabrics around your home. The discolouration usually comes in yellow or brown stains which become clearly visible especially on a white or light coloured decorating fabric. To prevent this from happening, provide sufficient air circulation and move your fabrics away from areas where combustion from oxidation is present.

3. Position the decorating fabric away from too much sunlight exposure

When fabrics are exposed to sunlight for a constantly long period, they will eventually become brittle and break. For bright coloured dyed decorative fabrics, this becomes clearly evident as colour fading.

So if you have vinyl fabrics or other type of fabrics around your home, be sure to take care of them properly. Aside from the decorating fabric care tips mentioned above, you should also consider providing at least a 3% allowance for shrinkage, and “de-pilling” to remove unsightly surface fibers. Pilling is the abrasion from normal wear and cleaning that causes fibers to unravel and the loose ends ball up on the fabric surface.
