Once you decide to undergo LASIK surgery for the treatment of your astigmatism, farsightedness or nearsightedness, it is best to strictly follow the guidelines regarding pre-op and post-op care. Read up and research to familiarize yourself with the procedure. Try to more or less visualize the whole process. Take note of the things you need to do prior to surgery, as well as the things you must avoid after undergoing LASIK.

Be sure to have plenty of rest before the operation. Avoid straining your eyes by watching television, using a computer, or reading books prior to surgery. After the procedure, you must avoid rubbing, touching, or poking your eye. The surgeon may give you a small piece of cotton wool to help with any discomfort you might experience. Some of the worst LASIK issues usually result from patients who don’t follow the proper aftercare routines.

Even if the flap feels fine immediately after the operation, you still need to take certain precautions. Remember that your eye has not yet fully recovered from the surgery. The patient must keep his or her eyes closed for two to four hours after being released from the clinic. It is also best to avoid water getting into your eyes for the first day. Keep your activities light, and as much as possible, do not drive until you have been allowed to do so by your doctor.

Patients must also avoid wearing makeup and applying facial creams near or around the eyes for a few days after the procedure. Make sure to consult with your Houston LASIK surgeon first before starting the practice again. This is to prevent contaminant particles from accidentally reaching the eye.

Patients must refrain from participating in any contact sport for at least a month after the surgery. If the Houston LASIK surgeon provides you with protective glasses or goggles, make sure to wear this device for at least a week or two after surgery.

It is important to follow the strict schedule given to you by your Houston LASIK surgeon when it comes to follow-up appointments after the surgery. Try not to miss any scheduled visit; this can cause a delay on your overall progress report.
