Author: Paul McIndoe For some people planning their summer holiday is a precise logistical exercise performed with almost military precision and a great deal of glee. For others, it is a necessary evil that involves the almost impossible task of trying to keep everyone in the family happy and so is often put on the back burner until the last minute. But for most it is somewhere in between those two extremes!
For those residing in the dedicated planners camp, the first step is to research a list of possible destinations well in advance, usually over a year before the desired travel date. Once the destination is settled upon it is time to leaf through a stack of holiday brochures, or browse online to find the ideal type of accommodation. When you have selected your destination then it2019s time to book the desired package or, if travelling independently, the best combination of flight and hotel. On the other hand, the more casual holiday booker may take a quick look on the web a few days before their anticipated departure date and subsequently purchase the cheapest deal available, regardless of the destination. Whatever approach is taken to booking a holiday it will depend upon several factors, such as how early holiday time can be booked at work and, for families with children, school term times; which will limit their dates of travel. When booking package deals with travel agents it is common for the price of travel insurance to be automatically included in the holiday price. However, that insurance may be refused if the traveller wishes to make their own arrangements, especially as holiday package insurance normally only includes a period of cover for that specific holiday. For many, purchasing single trip travel insurance from a third party would prove much cheaper, and of course is the only option for independent travellers. In addition, it is important to purchase travel insurance at the same time as the holiday is booked to insure against the possibility of a forced cancellation, for example due to illness or a family bereavement. In such circumstances, the cost of the holiday already spent can usually be recovered in full and then re-booked for a more convenient date. Frequent travellers may already possess their own annual travel insurance , bought separately or included, for example, as a benefit with some premium banking accounts. But whether arranged independently or taken as part of a package, travel insurance should be regarded as a 2018must-have2019 when planning any holiday, either taken abroad or within the UK.
