How DUI Attorneys Can Advice You About Plea Bargaining

When you’re charged with a DUI, you will almost always be offered a plea bargain deal or the choice to go to trial. Plea bargains are so common that some State attorneys actually hope that certain DUI defense attorneys take a case, because those DUI lawyers are so well-known for plea bargaining cases. But, when there is another option, why are plea bargains so popular? And more importantly than that, is the fact that they’re so popular a good indication that one will be right for you?

If you’re offered a plea bargain from the State’s attorney, a DUI lawyer who’s only out for that fee might encourage you to take it. This is because plea bargains take little to almost no time or effort on the part of the DUI lawyer, but they’ll still take as much of your money. They may tell you that they can get the charge lessened or, if you’re facing multiple charges that they can get some of those charges dropped.

In exchange, you’ll have to plead guilty to the charges against you and pay a fine and quite possibly, spend some time in jail. These are all of the things that you’re trying to avoid, but there’s more to it than just that.

Truthfully, you could speak to the State’s attorney yourself, without ever hiring a DUI lawyer, and be offered the same plea bargain. Sometimes a plea bargain really might be in your best interest, but it should usually only be used as a last result, and you should never feel pressured into accepting one.
