People usually have a notion that going to a dentist means there is something wrong with your teeth. But in reality, it is not how it goes. For both adults and children who have healthy teeth, a regular visit, which is every six months, is required. The purpose for these visits is to have a regular check up and regular cleaning at the same time. However, for individuals who are at greater risk for different oral conditions and / or diseases, twice a year isn’t enough.

Generally speaking, it is the dentist who will decide the number of times you must go to a dental clinic every year. Tobacco, smoking, alcohol, gum disease, pregnancy, very poor oral hygiene are just some of the factors that a dental surgeon takes into consideration when deciding how often you need to have for your dental cleaning and check up.

You have to always remember, that visiting a dentist is more of an obligation, rather than an option. When individuals don’t think that there is nothing wrong with their teeth, they’ll anticipate that a dental surgeon is not necessarily needed. However, people must be educated that going to a dental clinic doesn’t necessarily mean you need dentures, or you have an aching tooth. Instead, it is your way of ensuring that you have an oral cavity, healthy gums and teeth all at the same time.

Sometimes, there are cavities that cannot be seen by the naked eye. There are situations wherein people are not aware that they may already be suffering from a specific oral condition, but they are not aware of it, because they haven’t visited a dental clinic! This can result to further damages or other oral problems in the near future. This is why I have been stressing this important point out – a dentist isn’t just for unhealthy teeth and gums. It is for everyone to ensure that the entire oral cavity is maintained, and taken care of properly.

Are you aware that there is a huge percentage of people who are suffering from oral cancer? Unfortunately, there are some individuals who die because of it. At first, oral cancer cannot be easily distinguished. Most often, people who die from oral cancer are those who do not pay their dental surgeon a visit. These are the people without regular oral cleaning, and these are the people who were not able to diagnose that they have cancer.

That’s another importance of regular cleaning. During your check up and regular cleaning, the dentist also checks for possible diseases such as oral cancer. Yes, this is the type of condition that can be treated. But it will never be diagnosed, and treated, if you don’t consult your dentist on a regular basis.

Preventing bad breath is another primary reason of visiting a dental clinic on a regular basis. “Halitosis” is a condition wherein an individual suffers from having bad breath. No matter how long they brush their teeth, or regardless of the frequency they do brush their teeth, the stinky smell won’t go away. This is because the problem is within your oral cavity – and a dentist is the only specialist that can easily take care of this concern.
