How To Build Garden Sheds for Extra Storage

This article is to inform you on how to build garden sheds. As you know, there is never enough storage space in any home or garage. It is always nice to have an additional small shed where you can store all of your gardening tools in one spot.

When the day comes that you need to build a garden shed, you can either buy a kit or you can build it from the ground up. Naturally it might cost a little bit more if you decide to build it yourself, but you can build any size. Depending on the budget that you have allowed for your shed, and if you have the ability to do it yourself, this will determine the method of construction. If your building is going to be a permanent one, it can be set on concrete blocks. If you choose for it to be movable, it can be put on pressure treated lumber skids. Regardless of where it is put, the location needs to be leveled out.

To begin forming the floor you want to cut 2 x 6 pressure-treated lumber to lie flush with the outer edge of the block for your skids. Band joists are then cut to rest on top. Fit the corners together and then secured them with a 16 pound galvanized nails. When laying out the framing work, you will want to mark your first joist location 15 ¼ inch from the outer edge of the joists and then make a pencil mark at every 16 inch intervals.

Cut 2 x 6 joists and then positioned them between the outside wall frame. For the flooring you will want to use at least ¾ inch plywood, tongue and groove is optional. To attach the floor to the joists, you will want to use 8 pound galvanized nails. Next you will want to cut wall plates for the long walls and then position all studs on 16 inch centers except for the first one which will be at 15 ¼ inches. Install triple studs at both ends of the wall for nailing purposes. Where ever you decide to have your door, mark a rough opening on the plates and then build your headers from 2 x 6s and sandwich them around a half inch spacer. Attach the siding to the walls and secure the walls to the floor.

Build roof trusses and attach them to your building, and complete them by using plywood for the roof. Be sure and finish off your roof by adding shingles or metal roofing. No matter what your decision is on building a garden shed, it can be completed within a short amount of time. Storing everything in the same shed is a definite advantage when it is time to work in the garden.
