Esophageal cancer awareness is an important step focusing on some of the most important aspects of the disorder and makes a person knowledgeable about various areas to focus on while tackling with the disease. Awareness about esophageal cancer also helps to understand various forms and patterns of cancerous growth in esophagus and average rate of survival worldwide.

Detailed Overview of Esophageal Cancer Awareness

Esophagus is an organ connecting mouth to stomach and is the main passage of food swallowed by a person. Any kind of cancerous growth in this region directly restricts eating habits of the victim and may also lead to severe loss of weight in a considerably short time. Growth and spread of cancerous cells in esophagus may also cause other forms of head and neck cancers. Thus, one should be alert about any form of unnatural changes occurring in the area. Undergoing regular medical examinations under proper medical advice is the most reliable way to get rid of cancerous polyps in the esophagus.

Esophageal cancer awareness also helps a person to understand about various forms and intensities of the disorder. Cancer of esophagus is mainly of squamous cell carcinoma form and more than 90-95% of the cases detected worldwide belong to this type. In the United States of America (USA), more than 50% cases belong to another form of cancerous growth known as adenocarcinoma. In squamous cell carcinoma, malignant growth takes place in the epithelium while in adenocarcinoma, infection starts initially in the glandular areas of esophagus.

Esophageal cancer can be primary or secondary. Primary cancer of esophagus is a condition wherein the cancerous cells develop in the esophagus and increase the scope of infection by primarily attacking cells and tissues present in this area. Such cancer has a tendency to metastasize, but the polyps spread to other areas in late esophageal cancer stages when conditions become conducive for rapid growth of tumors. Secondary type of esophageal cancer is a disorder in which the cancerous polyps form on various other areas like neck, stomach, abdomen, lungs, blood, lymph nodes etc and infect esophagus at a later stage when such infected cells reach tissues located in esophageal areas.

Cancer of esophagus is detected more in males and targets mainly the adults beyond 0 years of age. People with previous medical history of the disorder or those having family history of esophageal cancer should undergo regular health tests under expert medical supervision. Smoking is a basic esophageal cancer cause and should be strictly avoided. One should also stay away from tobacco chewing and alcohol intake and must lead a safe sex life. Presence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is alarming and proper HPV vaccine should be taken in order to avoid damage to tissues and cells present in esophageal or other areas.

Intake of beverages high in alkali or acid content can cause severe damage to esophageal region. Also, infections, ulcers or injuries in esophageal tissues should not be ignored. One must also consult a physician in case of prolonged cough, irritations or inflammation in esophagus or throat. Regurgitation, mild or severe pains in chest, problems in passage of food to stomach, frequent sticking of food stuff to esophageal walls, vomiting of blood, and detection of lumps in esophagus should be dealt with on urgent basis.

Esophageal cancer awareness is very helpful to know various forms of esophageal cancer cure. Surgery is the most common form of treatment followed by some other aggressive cures like chemical treatment and radiation therapy. Targeted therapy, immunotherapy and biological therapy can also be undergone as both preventive as well as curative measures if desirable output is feasible.
