Growth in general term means increase in size, volume and weight of a substance, but when it is linked to living things, it gets associated with another term development. Growth and Development according to biological definition means a lifelong process which is manifested in the form of physical changes, behavioral changes, cognitive changes and emotional growth. Right from the birth to the end of the life, human body keeps on growing. If we restrict our study to the Growth and Development in Children below the age of 5 years, we can explain the Child Development in better manner.
Childs growth and development starts right after the ova of the mother are fertilized by the sperm of the father resulting in the formation of the zygote. The zygote implants in the mother womb and grows there for a whole 9 months, before opening his eyes in this materialistic world. In a few months the brain of the baby starts making connections with things and people around him. This is the reason why a baby stops crying in his mother’s arms and is not so comfortable in other’s arms. They recognize the face of their parents. They can also recognize their voices. Child Growth and Development is visible in the first year itself in the form of his crawling, then standing and then walking of his own; babbling to forming sounds to calling you “mama” and “dada”.
Growth and Development of Children is said to be almost steady from 2 to 10 years of age. But a lot of changes can be seen between the ages of 1 to 5 years. The child starts imitating the people he comes across during the age of 1 to 3 years. By the age of 3 the Childs Development reaches the stage when they try to do many things of their own as they become more independent, like that of deciding on what to wear, what to eat and so on. This is the age when the child tries to explore new things around him and therefore would need your constant guidance, support, love and care. When your child is between 2 to 3 years of age he would love to see your reaction to every rule that he breaks and does something that is out of the way. This is the age when a child starts developing habits. So it is better on your part to start inculcating some good habits in him. You can start by reading stories to him; be calm when he is upset and many more such actions. Playing games with him would develop his physical as well as mental growth. At this stage the Child Development takes to social and emotional development as well. The child starts expressing and communicating with his face and body. By the time a child touches 3 years, he is ready to grow socially and interact with people around him. He is now ready to go to school and develop new skills like learning ABC and 123.
Between the years 3 to 5 the child starts following the sense of direction. Also he develops friendship with other children of his age and starts comparing with them. One most common thing that is seen in a child of about 5 years is that to engage in “pretend play”. His cognitive skills also develop and he can now organize things, identify colors and many other such things. He may also start framing his own stories. Growth and Development of Children takes place at his own pace, in some the milestones appear a bit early while in others they may appear a little late. The best medicine to his proper growth and development is the correct nutrition, correct exposure and your tender love and care.
